Robot Symphony - Materials Collection

Materials Collection - Getting Ready to Get it Done

With our plan laid out (we're going with the xylophone), it's become time for us to gather materials. What we'll be working with is our xylophone, various motors, and structures for stability.

The part of each piece...

Overall, each component of our project has to work together with the others to create a finished product. The price of these components are laid out in our projects budget, as seen below --

The xylophone - the main apparatus - is a basic xylophone with a capable range from G2 to A4. We wanted one with a decently wide midrange sound, in hopes that we could take on a melody in the symphony. Here's a look at what we'll be working with:

Just as important, but not as big, are our motors. Our motors will be used to move various components in the x and y directions over the xylophone.

DC Motors (right) will then be used to aid in the striking of the keys.

To keep it all together, we'll be using a wooden frame and 3-D printed assemblies. The frame will help keep the whole project grounded, and the assemblies will connect the smaller parts such as the xylophone mallets to the DC motor.

Finally -- our brains of the piece -- will be the Teensy Arduino board. The Teensy Arduino (the Teensyduino), is a microcontroller development board that we will use to control and call upon our projects different pieces.

The Teensyduino comes in handy for many reasons, but for us, we need it because it provides us with MIDI support. More information on MIDI can be found on our previous post, and more information on the Teensy can be found on the Core Electronics website.

The parts may be simple but the come together in not so simple ways. We are on our way to building this project so stay tuned
